The Anglo-Chinese hotel company behind the super-luxe Opposite House in Beijing has done it agan - this time, getting us hot under the collar in a Hong Kong skyscraper. Set in the Pacific Place retail and commercial centre, The Upper House was envisaged by Hong Kongdesign stalwart Andre Fu as an inner-city bolt-hole.
British designer Thomas Heatherwick is responsible for the simple Bedonia stone portico, which sets an impressive tone. In the public spaces, limestone and bleached oak dominate, and a bamboo 'lantern' installation curves languidly up the escalator.
All 117 rooms are at least 70 sq m and Fu has generated an airy aesthetic with natural timbers, shoji glass, lacquered paper panels and green tea- and lilac-coloured upholstery. But there is a reason to leave the haven of the bedroom. Offering views of Victoria Harbour and featuring a 14m-long open kitchen, Cafe Gray Deluxe marks the return of chef Gray Kunz to the city.
